Web design leads: local businesses that need a website

Finding new web design clients usually means cold DMs that get ignored, referrals that dry up, or spending hours on LinkedIn. There has to be a better way.

The problem

25–28 %

of local businesses in the categories we scan had no website on Google Maps in New York, Los Angeles and Austin (measured July 2026). Each one is a web design lead nobody sold to anyone.

What "web design leads" usually means, and what these are

Most places that sell web design leads sell enquiries: a business owner filled in a form somewhere, and that form is forwarded to five designers who each pay for it and race to reply. You pay per lead, you compete on speed and price, and the owner is tired of being called by the time you get there.

Leadomos works from the other end. You search a category and a city ("restaurants in Austin", "gyms in Leeds") and it returns the local businesses that visibly need a website: no site at all, a broken link, a social-only presence. Nobody filled in a form; nobody else got the list. You get the phone, the email the business publishes (not a guessed one), the Instagram or Facebook page and, from the Pro plan, a first outreach email written for that specific business. Then you decide who to contact.

How many local businesses have no website

Measured in July 2026 on the categories Leadomos scans for web designers (plumbers, gyms, coffee shops, beauty salons, clothing stores and similar): in New York, 28 % of the businesses returned had no website listed on Google Maps; in Los Angeles, 28 %; in Austin, 25 %. Average rating of those businesses: 4.5 to 4.6 stars. They are good businesses with customers and reviews, not empty listings.

That is the pool. In a city of any size it is hundreds of owners who already have a reason to talk to you, and who are not being contacted by everyone else because they never asked for a quote.

What to do with the list

The businesses without a website are the easiest first email of your career: you noticed something true and specific about them. Send it as one short message (the AI draft is a starting point; add the one sentence only you can write), follow up three times over two weeks, and expect 5 to 15 % replies from a well-targeted list. The templates and the whole follow-up sequence are in the guide on cold email for web design, linked below.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a business doesn't have a website?

Leadomos checks each Google Maps listing and flags businesses with no website URL, a broken link, or a social-only presence. You can filter to show only those.

What kind of businesses should I target as a web designer?

Restaurants, hotels, local shops, gyms, beauty salons, plumbers, electricians — any local business that relies on foot traffic but has no online presence yet.

Can the AI email mention their specific missing website?

Yes. The AI email is personalised with the business name, category and location. It highlights the opportunity you're offering in a natural, non-spammy tone.

Are these exclusive web design leads?

They are not resold. A lead marketplace sells the same enquiry to several designers and charges each of them; here you run a search for a category and a city and the list is yours. Another designer would have to run the same search and pick the same businesses to reach the same owners, and by then your email has been in their inbox for a week.

How much does a web design lead cost?

A basic lead (business, category, location, website status) costs 1 credit; the phone and email the business publishes, the social profiles and the AI-written email add credits on top, so a fully loaded lead is around 5. The Starter plan is $15 a month for 350 credits: roughly 70 fully loaded leads, or 350 basic ones to skim before you unlock. No per-lead fees, no contract.

Which cities and countries are covered?

Any city Google Maps covers. Most searches today run in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Spain; the hubs below link the cities with measured demand. Type any other city and the search runs the same way.
